Children with autism have been found to be less anxious and frequently enthusiastic about engaging with robots due to their inherent interest in technology. Our robot was designed around those mechanical and academic strengths to activate the child’s interests and opens the door for communicating with and learning from the robot.

We found in clinical practice, children with autism frequently exhibit social discomfort in face-to-face interactions with their therapist. Studies have shown that anxiety and emotional dysregulation inhibits learning. By providing opportunities to learn and practice new skills with a robot as opposed to a human, an element of social anxiety may be alleviated.

Non-threatening and intrinsically motivates children.

Robots4Autism robot provides nonthreatening and consistently delivered interventions so children are less likely to sense a therapist’s frustration or begin to feel nervous because of an uncomfortable human interaction. The consistently positive learning experience leads to intrinsically motivated children who want to return to our robot again and again for learning which increases their development success.

Multiphase, research-based curriculum, delivered consistently

In developing our curriculum, we used the evidence-based practices of social narratives and video modeling. We isolated target skills and social behaviors necessary for appropriate social interactions that are challenging for children with ASD. Several phases are completed and additional modules are in development.
